Abstract
This chapter outlines the main features of the policy and legal regimes in the four States such as Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Discussion of each State’s regime commences with an outline of the location and main features of the particular hydrothermal vents within their territorial sea, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), or continental shelf, and the main stakeholders who have an interest in the regimes under development. This is followed by an examination of the key features of each regime. The chapter concludes by considering what lessons can be drawn from the domestic experience.
