Abstract
Toutes les recherches américaines concernant la préférence des femmes non enceintes révèlent qu'elles désirent un garçon comme premier enfant. Au Canada, nous avons déterminé la préférence des femmes non enceintes à l'aide de données de l'Enquête sur la fécondité (1984). Les femmes préfèrent un enfant de sexe masculin comme premier enfant (22 %, contre 16% pour une fille). Cependant, 62 % des répondantes déclarent n'avoir aucune préférence. Certaines différences apparaissent selon le lieu de résidence : les Québécoises expriment une légère inclination à l'égard d'une fille, tandis que les femmes des autres provinces canadiennes désirent un garçon. Il est intéressant de constater que près de la moitié des femmes ayant déjà un enfant — peu importe leur lieu de résidence — souhaitent avoir un second enfant de sexe opposé à celui du premier.
