Abstract
Neonatal intensive care has come a long way, and the advances in the field have led to increased survival rates of preterm infants over the past few decades. These survivors of extreme prematurity are now reaching adolescence and young adulthood; an increasing number of studies have been published on the outcomes of these premature infants. This article outlines and explores the current literature available on long-term outcomes of extremely and very low birth weight infants. Recent literature is extremely relevant to the field of adolescent medicine since many adverse outcomes do not appear until much later in life; this high-risk population should be closely monitored for the development of these conditions.
