El Tratado de Libre Comercio de America del Norte (TLCAN/NAFTA, EEUU/Canada/Mexico) y la frustrada hemisferica Asociacion de Libre Comercio de las Americas (ALCA/AFTA), son muestras de dos metodos diferentes de integracion economica en las Americas. Siendo el TLCAN el referente de mayor exito, frente a la virtual desaparicion del proyecto ALCA, por la renuencia de los Estados de Sudamerica a aceptar las propuestas estadounidenses; debido a la persistencia de criterios nacionalistas, contrarios al espiritu de una integracion del conjunto del continente, desde Alaska a Tierra del Fuego. A esas aspiraciones continentales se agregan en el articulo, en un nivel de objetivos de menos alcance, las reuniones y acuerdos de la Organizacion de Estados Iberoamericanos (muy lejos de ser un homologo de la Commonwealth), asi como la proyeccion de empresas espanolas en Iberoamerica y el Caribe.
