The National Research Council of Canada has begun a research project to develop improved methods to evaluate the useful lifetime of protective clothing for firefighters. As part of the project, guidelines for the retirement of firefighters' protective clothing are being developed, which can be used in conjunction with visual inspections and appropriate field tests. To support the development of these guidelines, a literature review has been conducted, and laboratory testing and field studies are being planned. To assist in implementing the guidelines and recording data in the field studies, a protective clothing management system is being developed. This system will help fire departments to maintain accurate records of the use, care and maintenance of their protective clothing.
