Les troubles de religion qui secouèrent la France durant la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle prirent fin lorsqu’Henri IV réussit à mettre de l’avant une politique de réconciliation nationale grâce à laquelle ses ennemis d’hier se rallièrent à son autorité. Ce processus s’articula autour d’une double réconciliation, la première religieuse, la seconde politique. Tout d’abord, le roi abjura le protestantisme et revint à la religion de ses ancêtres. Ce « saut périlleux » amena ses adversaires à se convertir à son parti. Ils avouèrent leurs fautes, demandèrent pardon au souverain, firent rédemption en promettant de lui être fidèle et de travailler à la restauration du royaume dans son ancienne gloire. Cet article examine comment l’homme de lettres catholique Pierre Matthieu (1563-1621) chercha à assurer sa réconciliation avec Henri IV. L’écriture de l’Histoire des derniers troubles de France fut pour lui une œuvre rédemptrice qui lui permit de « brûler ce qu’il avait adoré, et d’adorer ce qu’il avait brûlé ».
