Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The assumption, explicit or implicit, that affected the understanding of Presocratics in the nineteenth century assumption that they are philosophers who developed coherent systems and applied their principles to all areas of their investigation, also influenced the judgment that focused on the technical works of Democritus. This chapter makes some observations on the cultural context in which Democritus wrote his technical work and the image that gives him the technical literature (especially the medical literature and the literature on agriculture) of Late Hellenistic and Imperial era. It also presents a general picture of the technical literature in the last quarter of the fifth century BC. The age of sophistry is characterized by a certain specialization, but also by its opposite, the overall knowledge. Democritus was the first scientist whose polymorphic book production is of a technical nature. The original context of the chapter is in French. Keywords: Democritus; Imperial era; medical literature; literature on agriculture

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
