Abstract
In 2002, a towboat and two barges collided with a pier of the Interstate-40 bridge in Oklahoma, leading to the collapse of the bridge and 14 fatalities. This article discusses why the bridge collapsed and summarizes some ways that such disasters can be avoided. The article suggests bridges should be designed so that any piers, not just those directly on the shipping channel, can survive a collision. Vulnerable or weak piers on existing bridges should be reinforced or protected. Bridge owners should also consider installing detection and warning systems to alert drivers approaching a collapsed bridge.
