Abstract
El abuso de sustancias supone unos riesgos significativos para la salud de las mujeres en edad fertil de EE. UU. y, en aquellas que se quedan embarazadas, para sus hijos. El abuso o dependencia de sustancias se define como un patron inadaptado del uso de sustancias marcado por unas consecuencias negativas recurrentes y significativas asociadas al uso repetido de sustancias. El alcohol es la sustancia mas prevalente consumida por las mujeres en edad de ser madres, seguida del tabaco y de varias drogas ilegales. El uso de sustancias en el periodo previo a la concepcion predice un uso continuo pero a menudo limitado de sustancias durante el periodo prenatal. Los profesionales deben conocer las necesidades psicologicas, fisiologicas y sociales unicas de las mujeres en edad fertil y las ramificaciones legales y eticas asociadas que rodean al abuso de sustancias antes de derivar a la paciente a un equipo multidisciplinar comunitario para un tratamiento que a menudo es a largo plazo.
