L’idée de consacrer une réflexion à l’analyse du lien s’établissant entre des métropoles et leurs régions périphériques émerge des travaux réalisés et présentés au colloque 1998 de l’Association d’économie politique (Fontan, Klein, Tremblay, 1999). Plusieurs conférenciers, dont Veltz et Jalabert, posaient alors un constat de fond : l’analyse de la réalité socio-économique métropolitaine ne peut se limiter au cadre référentiel du paradigme du développement régional. Cet article répond à trois objectifs. Dans un premier temps, j’invoque les motifs qui nous ont guidé dans la réalisation de ce numéro d’Interventions économiques. Dans un deuxième temps, je soulève, à partir de quelques constats empiriques et théoriques, quelques questions sur la nature des liens passés et à venir entre la Grande région de Montréal et les autres régions du Québec. Dans un troisième temps, je présente les contributions des différents auteurs à ce numéro.
