inscribed on verso: thomas rae of rae and dickson early merchants built this home in george st fitzroy. it is remarkable owing to the fact that the bricks came from china and were of wonderful quality. the contractor for the building was john falconer who built many of the earlier palatial residences in this quarter / information from son of builder.thomas rae mlc was a manufacturer born 1819 in glasgow died 10 december 1862 arrived port phillip 1846 formed the firm rae dickson and co. soap and candle makers. mlc melbourne nov 1855-mar 1856.historical notes on verso of backing sheet.
