Au moment où l’information sous forme électronique tend à se rapprocher des gens par l’entremise, par exemple, de réseaux informatiques comme Internet, des barrières continuent de se dresser entre l’information et les personnes ayant une déficience visuelle. Le développement fulgurant des nouvelles technologies de l’information a permis l’apparition de technologies adaptées destinées notamment à accroître l’autonomie des personnes déficientes ayant des besoins spéciaux pour accéder à l’information. Le présent article s’attarde spécifiquement à une de ces technologies, la synthèse vocale, en mettant l’emphase sur le contexte technologique et social de sa création, sur son fonctionnement et ses composantes et finalement sur son application dans la vie courante et dans les milieux documentaires.
