Abstract
Rising income levels, the growth in population and globalization have all led to greater demands for wood products and nature reserves. These conditions raise the question of what effect new large-scale nature reserves would have on the forest products sector. An analysis of the demand and supply projections for forest products and the demand for nature reserves identifies potential areas of conflicts. Because of the low-cost nature of wood fibre production and their export market shares, new reserves established in Canada and Scandinavia would have both global and local impacts, more so than other regions due to their importance as exporters of wood products. New reserves in other regions would likely lead to impacts when they compete with timber output, but their global effect would be smaller as their importance as low-cost wood suppliers and excess producers is lower.
