Abstract
Olemme tarkastelleet koulutussukupolvia koulutuksen ja oppimisen merkityksiä ihmisten elämässä tutkivassa hankkeessamme (Antikainen & Huotelin 1996). Tuloksena oli neljän koulutuskohortin eli neljän koulutus- ja elämänkulkujen puitteiltaan eroavan ikäryhmän erottaminen. Koulutuskohorttien ydinkokemuksia tarkastellessamme saatoimme kuitenkin erottaa vain kolme kokemuksellista sukupolvea. Esittelemme nämä nyky-Suomessa elävät sukupolvet artikkelin alkuosassa. Tarkasteltaessa muutosta ja koulutussukupolvien dynamiikkaa saatamme todeta, että koulutusta koskevat ydinkokemukset voidaan palauttaa kahteen suureen kertomukseen: kansallisen kulttuurin kertomukseen ja taloudellisen rakennemuutoksen kertomukseen. Näin päädymme etsimään sivistystyön uusia mahdollisuuksia ensinnäkin aikuiskoulutukseen ja vapaaseen sivistystyöhön osallistuvien rakennepiirteiden valossa, toiseksi elämäkertatutkimuksemme pohjalta sekä lopuksi informaalin oppimisen eli arkipäivän oppimisen käsitteen ja sitä koskevan laajan kanadalaisen tutkimuksen (Livingstone 1999) tulosten siivittämänä. Vastaus sivistyksen kertomuksen postmoderniin katkeamiseen voi olla sivistys.
