La modernité entraîne une crise des fondements, une sorte de crépuscule du devoir. Il importe maintenant de revenir à la connaissance pratique, à l’apprentissage collectif, à des fondements moins prétentieux pour une éthique désabsolutisée. Où trouver ces fondements plus modestes ? Dans une meilleure intelligence des régimes de gouvernance et des habitus qu’ils engendrent. C’est ce qu’entend démontrer cet article en décrivant le passage du gouvernement à la gouvernance, le pluralisme qui lui est contemporain et la nouvelle éthique douce et nuancée qui s’en dégage.
