Ao longo dos últimos dez anos, os Estados latino-americanos tornaram-se alguns dos mais importantes exportadores de commodities de energia em termos de sua participação no total das exportações globais do setor. Mudanças estruturais na economia global, como o crescimento (industrial) das economias chinesa e indiana, levaram à desindustrialização das economias latino-americanas, prejudicando, assim, o principal setor que durante tanto tempo impulsionou os (sub)esquemas de integração regional. Além disso, as mudanças no quadro político e econômico dominante de alguns países mudaram seus interesses (nacionais e regionais). Com estas ideias em mente, este trabalho irá explorar teoricamente os motivos pelos quais o setor de energia na América Latina poderia criar pressões que frustram a unidade histórica para a integração do continente, e em vez disso causar 'desintegração', uma vez que este sector pode evidenciar a competitividade em vez de complementaridade desses países para as quotas de mercado. Com foco nos dois acordos de integração regional mais tradicionais da América Latina, o Mercosul e a Comunidade Andina, este trabalho irá contemplar o amplo espectro de arranjos políticos economia evidente na América Latina, em particular seus respectivos padrões de projeção em modos de integração regional. É necessário entender como os modelos específicos de orientação político-econômica incorporadas aos diferentes arranjos podem influenciar o processo de (des)integração e, como elas afetam o destino de arranjos institucionais existentes.
