Abstract
Cet article retrace quelques-unes des grandes étapes qui ont marqué l’évolution de l’édition et du commerce du livre au Québec. Depuis le milieu du XIX e siècle l’édition littéraire s’est développée avec l’aide des pouvoirs publics. Au cours des décennies, elle a enregistré des gains importants malgré les difficultés liées à une faible densité de population et à la concurrence commerciale des grandes sociétés européennes. Aujourd’hui où la majorité des ouvrages écoulés en librairie sont d’origine étrangère, l’édition québécoise fournit plus du tiers du total des ventes. L’histoire de l’édition littéraire au Québec demeure encore celle d’une industrie à la conquête de son propre marché.
