Abstract
Both Belgium and the Netherlands can be counted among the more secularized countries in Europe. Whereas Belgium historically is a predominantly Catholic country, the Netherlands are characterized by an equilibrium between Catholics and Protestants. In Belgium, the two universities of Louvain are of paramount importance with regard to theological education and research. The gap between the universities and seminaries is rather pronounced. The situation is different in the Netherlands where Nijmegen is the oldest Catholic university and where seminaries were transformed into universities in the 1970s, a trend which currently goes into the other direction again. The evolution of theological education in the low countries is influenced by several elements, including new developments in church and society and a more utilitarian conception of universities as well as by methodological changes concerning the study of humanities.
