Abstract
W 1831 r. utworzono w Suszu garnizon wojskowy. Z tego względu od 1832 r. dwa razy do roku proboszcz z Dzierzgonia odprawiał nabożeństwa w suskiej świątyni ewangelickiej. Od 1856 r. msze św. celebrowano w tej miejscowości już 4 razy do roku. Comiesięczną posługę duszpasterską w Suszu zainicjowano 15 maja 1861 r. Kilka lat później – w 1867 r. zakupiono za 1500 talarów budynek, w którym urządzono mieszkanie dla miejscowego księdza, a także tymczasową salę lekcyjną oraz kaplicę. Koszty pozyskania nieruchomości pokrył diecezjalny komitet Stowarzyszenia świętych Bonifacego i Wojciecha w Pelplinie. Pierwszego duszpasterza w Suszu – ks. Franza Alberta Loepera ustanowiono 20 czerwca 1870 r. dzięki deklaracji ze strony Stowarzyszenia św. Bonifacego w Dorsten, które zobowiązało się przekazywać na rzecz uposażenia duchownego 300 talarów rocznie przez 10 lat. W tym czasie mieszkało na obszarze analizowanej placówki ok. 230 katolików (w tym 40 żołnierzy). Prywatną szkołę katolicką w opisywanej miejscowości erygowano 13 kwietnia 1871 r. Początkowo uczyło się w niej 15 dzieci. W 1872 r. opiece ks. F. Loepera powierzono katolików mieszkających w Zalewie. W ciągu pierwszych lat działalności władze państwowe odmawiały przyznania placówce duszpasterskiej w Suszu praw parafialnych. W efekcie zrezygnowano tymczasowo z planów budowy własnej świątyni.
