RESUME/ABSTRACT La sociologie n'a pas fait de la notion egalite un objet d'analyse proprement sociologique, osant peu s'aventurer au-dela de la critique marxienne de l'egalite. Une partie importante de son champ est ainsi constituee par un corps d' analyses, toujours en developpment, autour du concept d'inegalites sociales. Pourtant, l'egalite constitue bel et bien une sorte de concept horizon partir duquel les inegalites sociales sont pensables et pensees, quelles que soent les approches privilegiees. Qu'en est-il de cette face obscure de la sociologie ? L'egalite peut-elle nous renseigner sur les rapports sociaux inegalitaires ? Peut-on en faire un objet d'analyse pour observerces rapports ? A l'occasion du debat social et scientifique presque quarantenaire sur les politiques d'action positive, destinees favoriser [much less than] l'acces a ... l'egalite [much greater than] a des groupes de populations minorisees par la race, le sexe, l'ethnicite, on a procede a un examen sociologique des usages de la notion egalite. L'art icle rend compte de la perspective d'analyse developpee dans ce cadre. On verra qu'elle eclaire sous un nouveau jour les debats scientifiques de (de) legitimation des politiques d'action positive, tout en permettant de depasser l'idee d'ambiguite chere aux sciences sociales pour apprehender le sens social de l'egalite. Sociology has not made the notion of equality a specifically sociological object of analysis. Indeed, it has ventured little beyond a Marxist critique of equality. A significant part of its field is thus constituted by a corpus of still developing analyses focused around the concept of social inequalities. However, equality is a kind of horizon concept on the basis of which social inequalities are thinkable and thought about, whatever the approach taken. How do things stand with this obscure side of sociology? Can equality inform us about unequal social relations? Can we make it an object of analysis for the observation of these relations? In light of the nearly forty-year-old social and scholarly debate around affirmative action policies intended to foster equal opportunities for populations minoritized by race, gender and ethnicity, this article provides a sociological study of the uses of the notion of equality. It discusses the analytic framework developed in this regard. As will be shown, it sheds new light on the scholarly debates surrounding the (de)legitimation of Affirmative Action Policies, while enabling us to go beyond the presumed inherent vagueness of this notion in the social sciences to grasp the social meaning of equality. INTRODUCTION Depuis le [18.sup.c] siecle, la notion d'egalite constitue le vehicule ideologique principal des pratiques dites d'equite en Occident -- cela tant au plan juridique, politique que social. Au [20.sup.c] siecle, les politiques dites d' integration ou d' emancipation de groupes sociaux minoritaires procedent de la categorie egalite. Plus pres de nous, depuis plus de trente ans, opinions et etudes scientifiques sur les politiques sociales dites d' action positive (1) s' appuient sur la notion d'eglite pour favoriser la mise en place et la pratique de ces politiques, mais aussi pour les denoncer. Au coeur des debats entourant ces politiques sociales, la notion d'egalite connait divers usages et des developpements plus ou moins elabores. qui paraissent incontourables. qu'on fasse un examen empirique de la portee reelle de ces politiques ou qu'on se penche sur leurs fondements socio-ideologiques, en se centrant soit sur leur ancrage juridique, soit sur la rhetorique politique ou encore sur les rapports entre divers groupes sociaux qui leur ont donne naissance. (2) Toutefois, peu d'etudes se sont penchees sur ces divers usages implicites et explicites de la notion d'egalite au sein des discours sociaux sur l'action positive.
