ISBN 11 933710-11-X. $9.95.It is said that good things come in small packages, and that is indeed the case with this small collection of hymns from the heart, mind, soul, and pen of Brian Wren. In God Rejoicel marks the ninth collection of hymn texts written by Wren which has been jointly published by Hope with Stainer and Bell. The author mentions this mutually beneficial relationship in the foreword to this collection and dedicates the volume to the memory of George and Nancy Shorney. The thirty-six texts, paired with tunes both familiar and new, are divided into five sections:Section 1: Jesus: From Cradle to Cross - Hymns 1-3Section 2: Easter Hymns - Hymns 4-7Section 3: Church and Mission - Hymns 8-14Section 4: Praise - Hymns 15-18Section 5: Metrical Psalms - Hymns 19-36In section 1, Wren's interest in and study of theology is revealed in three well-crafted and eminently useful hymns. The first text, Come, Jesus Christ, meet us today briskly takes us through the life of Christ as infant, youth and man-deftly tying up and summing up these three stages of Christ's life into the common theme of:Come, Risen Christ, with bread and cup,your people still to feed.Come now, to love and lift us upand meet our every need.In section 2, Wren states that these four Easter hymns were written to be submitted to a hymn-writing competition being held by a Methodist Church in Vancouver, Canada. We are given a rare glimpse into his process of writing as these hymns allow us to see how one writer grapples with the same theme, Christ's resurrection, in different ways. It is interesting to note that while there are ideas common to all four texts, and phrases common to two of the texts, which are intentional on the part of the author, each of the all four texts stands eloquently on their its own.Section 3 is an eclectic set of texts which were requested, offered or commissioned to explore particular aspects of the church's life. I admit freely that I was both caught off-guard and completely taken by the first text in this set Accompany with singing-a hymn to be sung at the graveside or at the crematorium when an individual's mortal remains are commended to the ages. Wren writes the following regarding this text:No. 8 (Accompany with Singing) reacts against a sub-Christian trend that I believe pastors and churches should strongly and explicitly oppose and expresses my convictions on the matter in a tartly worded stanza probably better spoken than sung:Let no-one's flesh, in privatebe bundled to its plotor trundled to an ovenbehind a parking lot.As children tend and treasurea fading autumn leaf,befriend each fife departingwith public works of grief. …
