LESS THAN KIN, MORE THAN KIND: THE ROLE OF POSITIVE PARENTING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FUNCTIONING AMONG YOUTH IN FOSTER CARE
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The present study examined the importance of parental nurturance, parentchild cohesion, and parent-child relationship quality in the prediction of social functioning and internalizing and externalizing problems among youth in foster care.Data came from 257 youth in foster care, aged 10-18 years old, and from their primary caregivers, as part of an annual interview required of youth in the Ontario child welfare system.Parent-and youth-reports of parenting and of youth outcomes were obtained as part of this interview. Results were inconsistent across age groups, however, higher parent ratings of nurturance generally predicted fewer internalizing problems in youth, and better youth ratings of parent-child relationship quality predicted increased youth prosocial behaviour and fewer internalizing problems.Inconsistency of results may be related to variables of particular importance to the foster-parent child context that were not accounted for in the present study (i.e., attachment).v DEDICATION For all the youth who reside or have resided in the care of the Ontario child welfare system; may this work and others like it inspire research that will continue to improve the lives of these youth in the years to come. Thanks also to all of my friends in Windsor and Ottawa who supported me during the process, especially those who listened, helped brainstorm, offered advice, answered questions, loaned me books, and told me when to seek expert advice.Special thanks to Lisa, for helping to make these past two years go by so quickly, to Shannon, for your long-distance friendship, and to Joanne, for your computer 'help'.I must also thank all the members of my graduate cohort, who are truly some of the smartest and funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, and whose company has made these first two years of graduate school so much fun. Finally, many thanks to my family, especially my parents, who have been so supportive and encouraging (both financially and emotionally!)throughout my education. Thanks to my mother, who surely instilled in me the sense of curiosity that serves me so well in research, and to my father, who taught me to see the humor in every situation, a skill that has been tested many times during the last two years. And last, but certainly not least, to Adam, my best friend and my partner, a special thank you for your endless patience and emotional support at all hours of the night and day, and for always encouraging me to follow my dreams, even when they take me far away.
