Résumé
My aim in this brief essay is to explore the emergence of Latinas/os as a new subject of inquiry in theAmericas, one of the key elements in EduardoMendieta’s longer, very suggestive article in this issue ofNepantla. I will also make, in passing, a few comments on three other elements central to his piece: the role of public intellectuals today, the importance of giving a postcolonial inflection to American pragmatism, and the significance of Cornel West as a model for intellectual work in the Americas today. Needless to say, I am deeply interested in these topics as well, and have much more to say about them, but they deserve more time and space than I have on this occasion. It could be said that U.S. Latinas/os provide a living challenge to the historical blueprints of American imaginaries, since their specific gaze on America often cuts through the customary North/South divide. It is therefore very important to ponder, as Mendieta’s essay does, what the Latino presence signifies, most specifically, what the role of Latinas/os will be as newly configured subjects with their own intellectual classes within the United States. I would only add that this is not only a question for the United States, or for the American school of pragmatic philosophy, but for Latin America and its intellectual traditions as well. Indeed, given the growing presence of Latinas/os in Canada, one could also add that nation to this new cartography and simply state that it is a question for the Americas as a whole, even if the focus on Latinas/os is primarily inspired by the great number of them living in the United States. A telling new book by Nestor Garcia Canclini, a well-known Argentine anthropologist who works in Mexico, carries the title Latinoamericanos buscando lugar en este siglo (2002 [Latin Americans looking for a place in this century]).
