Reinhard R. Doerries is no ordinary Ordinarius. Born into a German academic family, he spent much of his youth on a midwestern farm and at Concordia College, went on to earn graduate degrees in art history, modern history, and business administration in the United States, Germany, and France, and to build a career in international banking and business. Since turning to research and teaching, he has made significant contributions in international relations, the acculturation of overseas immigrants, and, perhaps his most enduring concern, the operation and influence of national intelligence services. This festschrift in his honor is, for that reason, extraordinary in its diversity. With twenty-eight essays—nine in English—divided into ten thematic sections, it contains something for almost everyone. Social and cultural historians can find articles on the German-language press in Philadelphia during the American Revolution and on the anti-slavery character of that press in antebellum New Orleans. There is a comparison of notions of femininity in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century America and Germany, an examination of Canadian immigration policies, and another of the experiences of two women immigrants, one German and one Irish, in Canada in the 1920s and 1930s. There are essays on the efforts of Heinz Kloss to raise the national consciousness of German Americans during the Third Reich, on minority language policies in Canada and Switzerland, and, for good measure, on the American regionalist painters of the 1930s.
