In the United States, programs for dementia patients and their caregivers have been separate - support groups and training for caregivers and day care for patients. Building on the concept of Alzheimer's Cafés offered in Europe and Canada where caregivers and patients attend together, the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, in partnership with the local Alzheimer's Association, introduced a Memory Café in Lexington, Kentucky in October 2011. Located at the Living Arts and Science Center, the Café provides a welcoming and stigma-free setting for caregivers and those with memory loss to socialize, share ideas and enjoy food and music. Offered once a month for two hours, the main goal of the Café is socialization to combat the isolation often experienced by families dealing with a dementia diagnosis. The popularity of the Café has grown, increasing from 3 to 6 families in the first year to 8 to 10 families in 2012. Attendance, with limited promotion, indicates community need and evaluations from participants document the program's value. An evaluation at the one-year program anniversary and group discussion of the results elicited comments such as “Don't change a thing, except have more frequent meetings,” and “we look forward to this all month…it keeps us going.” In order to ensure that the Café meets the needs of participants, the format has been modified based on their feedback. For example, the Café originally included an informational table of educational materials and set aside time for group activities such as the creation of family memory books and holiday crafts, but these activities were eliminated when participants requested less structured time to allow more opportunity for visiting with other attendees and staff. Future plans include assessments of the impact of the Café on caregiver and patient quality of life and expanding the role of music as programs where music was integral have been the best received. Presentation of findings from the development and evaluation of the Kentucky Memory Café should facilitate the development of Memory Cafés in other locations.
