Primary care providers need to become familiar with all options in order to offer comprehensive treatment programs. The omission of viscosupplementation, therefore, was surprising. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved hyaluronan-based viscosupplements in 1997 for the treatment of symptoms of knee osteoarthritis after failure of nonpharmacologic therapy and acetaminophen.
