Books for General Reader IA. Books in English Bazzana, Kevin. Wondrous Strange: The Life and Art of Glenn Gould. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004. 528 pp. ISBN 0-19-517440-2 (hardback). $35. Bazzana's previous volume on Gould, subtitled the performer in work, focused on pianist's art. Here we have a richly documented biography of this fascinating Canadian, whose Goldberg Variations became one of best selling recordings in United States. Gould's relationship with Beethoven's music was somewhat lukewarm, but performances are no less compelling. He recorded all of concertos; several of sonatas; Bagatelles, Opuses 33 and 126; and Variations, Opuses 34, 35, and WoO 80. His recording of solo piano transcription of Fifth Symphony met with mixed reviews. Includes numerous photographs, an extensive bibliography of sources, and index. Buch, Esteban. Beethoven's Ninth: A Political History. Translated by Richard Miller. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003. 327 pp. ISBN 0-226-07812-4. $17. Supplementary lists provide access to collections, competitions, and other performances by more than one person, and to composers. Beethoven's concertos and several of sonatas are well represented by such diverse artists as Glenn Gould and Murray Perahia. The most frequently taped Beethoven work appears to be Appassionata Sonata. Each listing includes a brief evaluative statement of performance with occasional quotes from reviews. Some of listed tapes are still available for purchase, but other older titles may be more difficult to track down. Holoman, D. Kern. The Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire, 1828-1967.
