Book Review: Finnie’s Handling the Young Child with Cerebral Palsy at Home By Bower, Eva 4th edition , Butterworth Heinemann , 2009 , US$53.95, £26.99, €38.99 (Paperback), pp 396 . ISBN 978 0 7506 8810 9 In 1974, as a newly qualified physiotherapist, I acquired the 2nd edition of ‘Finnie’s Handling the Young Cerebral Palsied Child at Home’ and it became my bible. It now gives me pleasure to be reviewing the 4th edition some 35 years later. This book covers all the topics needed for therapists, families, and carers to help the young child with cerebral palsy (CP). This book presents very well. It has 28 informative, visual, and clear chapters covering all areas needed by parents and therapists alike to ease and oil the often difficult pathway of the infant with CP, and their families, into childhood. The additional chapters deal with the more contemporary issues of emotional health, techniques in diagnosis, coping with hospital appointments, orthopaedic issues, and orthotics, to name but a few. The newly included Chapter 20 is devoted to the Gross Motor Function Classification System and the Ontario Motor Growth curve. This chapter is clearly set out and a very useful addition to enable parents to understand the classifications as seen in reports and information leaflets. It enables parents to get to grips with the terminology used by professionals. The Communication chapter is a fine example of the effective mixture of detailed information and visual practical advice. Sleep, or in the case of children with CP and their families lack of sleep, is often an overwhelming area of distress and concern. The chapter devoted to this subject offers useful information around the process of sleep and practical advice on positioning and bedtime routines. This book has been revised in such a way that it continues to deliver a practical, informative, and a very visual guide to both parents and physiotherapists alike. The drawings continue to work their magic by bringing the child alive and providing a practical focus. The book is easy to use and clear. Every word and every chapter will help families, carers, and therapists navigate their way through the minefields they will inevitably encounter in doing the right thing at the right time for their child.
