Résumé
Abstract This paper seeks to bring together two papers that I worked on during the early 1990s. My focus was on both opening up for debate the concept of globalization, applying it to sport and using an Eliasian approach. In addition, i sought to draw together issues of national identity, gender and globalization – as issue which was, and, to a degree, remains unexplored. Specific examples of British/English sport and wider political concerns were used to highlight the broader theoretical issues involved. Several of these concerns remain topical.
