Islam in the Eyes of the West: Images and Realities in an Age of Terror * Edited by TAREQ Y. ISMAEL and ANDREW RIPPIN
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
These are the proceedings of a conference organized by the International Centre of Contemporary Middle Eastern Studies and the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, 28–30 March 2008. In their Preface the editors state that the aim of the conference was to examine the relations between the Muslim world and the West. The authors of twelve of the papers and the editors, who are mostly from Canada and the United States, have narrowed ‘the West’ to mean the US and chosen to concentrate attention on the relations of the US with the Muslim world in the last decade or so of the twentieth century and since. Relations between Europe and the Ottoman Empire in other periods of history are, however, briefly discussed. The thirteenth paper, ‘Islam, Muslims, neighbors in Asia’, dealing with the transformation of Japan’s perceptions of Islam as shown in its media, seems of doubtful relevance. The narrowing of ‘the West’ and the short time-span implied by the expression ‘age of terror’ of the subtitle lead to some important consequences. It means that the authors of the papers and the writers they discuss cannot really do justice to the European contribution, especially that of France, Germany and Italy, to the diffusion of Islamic culture in the West from the seventeenth century onwards. Nor is there apparent any awareness of the important and positive statement of the Roman Catholic Church on Islam at Vatican Council II in 1965. (The statement has defined the position of the Church towards Islam since then.) As the editors say in the Introduction, the most prominent themes of the book focus on Western–Islamic conflict and the negative representation of the Islamic ‘other’, albeit the authors do attempt to survey alternative forms of relations, both real and possible.
