This article reviews a dozen new editions of Victorian texts published by Broadview Press (Peterborough, Canada) and another by Oxford University Press in its World's Classics series. Let us, to continue in the vein, be glad thereat. For undergraduate reading lists will inevitably be shaped in large measure by what is readily available at reasonable prices. Besides, only the most serendipitous of browsers in second-hand bookshops are likely to light on some of the less well-known of the works under review here. Undistinguished typography, crowded pages, cramped margins, and brittle bindings, once characteristic particularly of North American paperback reprints, appear now to have been superseded, and Broadview Press is producing texts that many will probably judge more attractive than Oxford University Press's well-known World's Classics, which are themselves by no means unacceptable. The rather longer pages are printed on whiter paper, and there is just a little more space for readers' marginal comments. Chapter titles, however, are not always accommodated as running heads; this is regrettable as they help focus attention. …
