Canadian veterinarians will be pleased to know that a reference on practice management, authored by a Canadian and with a meaningful Canadian perspective, is now available. Although much of the material in this 400-page book has been presented elsewhere in veterinary management literature, it is the way in which the material is presented and referenced in this book that makes it especially effective. Each of the 12 chapters starts with an in-hospital scenario that exposes management problems with which the reader can quickly identify. Subsequently, the means of rectifying the problems are discussed with highlighted key phrases and point summaries that help to keep the reader on track. At the end of each chapter, there are work sheets that allow the reader to transfer from theory to practice. The author has been a pioneer in innovative veterinary continuing education. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that an included CD-ROM (extra fee to “unlock”) exists to supplement the written text. It includes the chapter work sheets to allow for modification and personalization, and it expands the written text to assist in the development of business plans, hospital manuals, job descriptions, etc. The practice internet module on the CD is a direct link to some 350 internet sites. Therefore, the appended resources in both the written text and on CD yield a wealth of additional information. The scope of management topics covered is comprehensive. The section on Business Planning includes a review of the financial statement and the important indices within. Key profitability, productivity, and cost control benchmarks are discussed, and current survey data are included. The information relates to small animal, large animal, and mixed practices. The chapter on People Management stresses the importance of adequate job descriptions, work appraisals, motivation, continuing education, etc. It then supplies the tools of implementation by way of work sheets and templates. There are chapters on communication, both internal and external, and marketing of veterinary practice. There is considerable discussion of the Human-Animal Bond. The authors commitment to the topic is evidenced by the statement: “The human-animal bond must be first and foremost in the eyes of the client of a veterinary practice. This is the ultimate marketing message for the 21st century.” Effective Veterinary Practice suggests to me that it is the way that more books will be formatted in the future; namely, written text interwoven with the “cool” media of internet and CD-ROM to allow information to remain current and relevant to the reader's individual interests and needs. In summary, Effective Veterinary Practice both challenges and assists veterinarians and their staff in making the transition from default to design management, where the impact of leadership and team involvement can be felt and its fruits harvested.
