Résumé
Canadian and American Women is a collection of presentations delivered at the third international conference organized by the Center for Euro-Atlantic Studies of the University of Genoa in 1999. The conference brought together senior scholars and graduate students from Canada, Italy, and the United States to foster international research collaboration on women's history. The book includes more papers about Canadian women's experiences than American case studies. The focus on Canadian women's history complements Italian scholars' long interest in Canadian fiction by women. The central theme of the book is “the passage of women from the private sphere of activity to public experiences” (p. 9). Rather than engaging in the ongoing theoretical debates about the definition of separate spheres, the authors chose case studies that illustrated the conflict between the concepts of public and private in the lives of women who did not adhere to the rigid boundaries imposed by the ideology of separate spheres. The first section, “Journeys and Memories,” explores the complexities between individual and collective identity formation. Papers by Sylvia L. Hilton and Algerina Neri draw on the literature of women's nineteenth-century travel writing to examine how European women articulated their own identity through their encounters with “the Other” in Mexico and Canada. Catherine Clinton and LeeAnn Whites discuss black women's challenges to the negative construction of black womanhood and the cultural hegemony of white women and men in the American South.
