Résumé
First Peoples Theology Journal: A Journal Devoted to the Study and Expression of Indigenous Theology, vol. 4, no. 6 (June 2006). Pubfished by Indigenous Theological Training Institute, Minneapolis, Minn., 2006. 120 pp. + DVD. $14.00 (paper). Decade of Remembrance, Recognition, and Reconciliation ends in 2007; like other of the church's decades of . . .it has been largely overlooked. This decade has been the Episcopal Church's undertaking to recognize the presence and gifts of native peoples. It was inaugurated ceremonially with the signing of the New Covenant at Jamestown on All Saints' Day, 1997, by then-Presiding Bishop Edmond L. Browning, leaders of a variety of communities in the Northern Hemisphere, and members of the Episcopal Church's Executive Council. New Covenant proclaimed four principles-justice and truth, self-determination, respect for traditions, and stewardship of God's creation-and called for repentance and reconciliation as marks of a new partnership between the Episcopal Church and its Indigenous (p. 17). This issue of First Peoples Theology Journal gives an informative and moving account of the growth of Native American ministry as it emerges from the legacy of colonial paternalism into self-determination and partnership among the various first nations and with the non-native church. This growth takes place against a backdrop of ongoing suffering and survival, betrayal and repentance, discouragement and hope. narratives and remembrances provided by Owanah Anderson, Lawrence Hart, Robert Two Bulls, Carol Gallagher, Hone Kaa, and others set out the complicated, often troubling, sometimes inspiring histories of various Anglican churches' ministry to and with peoples in the Americas and in Aotearoa/New Zealand. These essays are complemented by reflections and challenges from Steven Charleston, Doyle Turner, Jenny Plane Te Paa, and Ginny Doctor (among others), as well as by poetry, art, prayers, and liturgy. Also included is a documentary on DVD, examining the difficult history and effects of Canadian residential schools for first nations children. This is a rich, rich publication, and it's not possible to explore all its treasures here. Among these are Steven Charleston's article The Global Tribe which proposes that indigenous culture is on the cutting edge of global civilization (p. 23) because it is characterized by the ability to maintain traditions and community while adapting to the onslaught of change, including encounter with significant others. …
