The <i>Journal of Diabetes</i> in its ninth year

It is no surprise that more than 100 journals specialize in the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism, many with a focus on diabetes. The Journal of Diabetes was started to foster collaboration between investigators from East and West; it has an international Editorial team, with both Asian and Western participation, and now has contributions from China, the US, India, Australia, Canada, Spain, Iran, Italy, Japan, Turkey, and many other countries. We enter Volume 9 with the decision to publish monthly issues. Over the first 8 years of publication, nearly 700 manuscripts have been published, over some 4000 pages. Our current acceptance rate is around one-fifth of submissions. We have been gratified by the continued increase in citations, giving the Journal an impact factor of 2.5. Most of our readership is now online. In total, we have seen nearly 500 000 abstract views and 300 000 full-text downloads, with a gratifying pattern of increase in usage (Fig. 1). Nearly 2500 institutions now allow clinicians and researchers to access the latest content in the Journal, and we anticipate that readership will continue to increase. It seems that the future of publication will increasingly be online, and we have decided in 2017 to move to an online-only publication. We are including representative figures of some manuscripts in the email Table of Contents, and encourage all readers to sign up for these free emails from our home page (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/user-registration). In addition, the full text of the editorial and news features and two articles will be freely available for each issue, and we are exploring additional online access formats, with presence on WeChat (search for “yitangwang”) and an iOs app (available in the App Store by searching for “Journal of Diabetes”). With a world diabetes prevalence of 415 million people and projections that that number will increase by more than half over the next quarter of a century,1, 2 we need more and better understanding of diabetes and newer approaches to its management.
