ProckJeanette W. Schiff wrote Working with Homeless and Vulnerable People: Basic Skills and Practice with the direct service practitioner in mind. She provides introductory information on how to effectively work with families and individuals who are experiencing homelessness or other vulnerabilities such as mental health disorders and addiction that can lead to housing insecurity. Working with Homeless and Vulnerable People: Basic Skills and Practice introduces the interested reader to basic interventions and best practice models for working with these populations, including an introduction to the Housing First model. A unique feature is the exercises at the end of the chapter that assist the reader with developing basic approaches to utilize the aforementioned interventions. The emphasis of this book is on providing experienced social service workers, as well as those just entering the field, with fundamental information that will lead to competent practice.The first five chapters of Working with Homeless and Vulnerable People outline the history and prevalence of homelessness in the United States and Canada, describe basic interventions and skills for working with this population, and provide a brief overview of the case management and housing services that this clientele may need to move beyond homelessness toward stability. The author points out the importance of engagement and building trust as the first steps to forming a working relationship. Individuals who are homeless or experiencing vulnerabilities find it difficult to rely on anyone (p. 27) for assistance. Therefore, it is essential that the social service worker maintain respect for the clients' wishes, be sensitive to their changing needs, and be willing and able to communicate in an open and honest manner.Chapter 6 provides a historical perspective of traditional housing options for homeless and vulnerable populations, as well as a comprehensive description of the Housing First model, a strategy that provides rapid re-housing while building capacity through supportive services and assistance needed to maintain housing.
