There are three texts before me, like the law. Each possesses letters; discusses letters; explores epistolary traditions; inquires after the relevance of letters, in philosophy and literature; is aware of letters as graphics, form (genre, the letter as extended apostrophe), and literature. They are stuffed with other texts and themselves, folded, folding with(in) (out) one another, priority varying according to certain protocols (teaching, reading, writing, calendars, correspondences, genres, disciplines, [illiteracies, languages, etc.). They are besotted with letters, postcards, and, at times implausibly, one another. The table of their titles is below (with how they will be hereafter referenced within square brackets following the title) without the authors' names (included herewith, John Barth and Jacques Derrida, although multiple authors are assigned, resigned [to], refused, forged, and referred to within these texts). The original publication dates are disordered: 1980, 1974, and 1979, respectively (more so, with the dates of translation: 1987 and 1986, respectively, thrown in in an anxiety of influence). I impose serious patterns you will find amusing, not serious enough, illiterate at times, illegible, laughable, forgettable, coded, imperative: e.g., IC: Immaculate Conception, Imperatif Categorique in [G], Implausible Coincidence in [L], Index Codicillorum [Aside on sorting, posts, and Maxwell's Demon: The organization Trystero--the mysterious communication system that Oedipa knew a few things about [...] it had opposed the Thurn and Taxis postal system in Europe; its symbol was a muted post horn; sometime before 1853 it had appeared in America [...] it survived today [...] for those [...] who believed in the reality of Maxwell's Demon. [...] The Demon could sit in a box among air molecules that were moving at all different random speeds, and sort out the fast molecules from the slow ones. Fast molecules have more energy than slow ones. Concentrate enough of them in one place and you have a region of high temperature. You can then use the in temperature between this hot region of the box and any cooler region, to drive a heat engine. Since the Demon only sat and sorted, you wouldn't have put any real work into the system. So you would be violating the Second Law of Thermodynamics, getting something for nothing, causing perpetual motion (Pynchon 62, 80)].
