An awfully big adventure! J. M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" im medialen Transfer
Notice bibliographique
= Almost from the very beginning, Peter Pan has found his audience in more than one medium: First introduced in a novel for adults, “The Little White Bird” (1902), Scottish playwright and novelist James Matthew Barrie (1860–1937) transferred his most beloved character to the stage in the immensely successful play “Peter Pan or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up” (1904), which he later retold in the form of a novel (“Peter and Wendy”, 1911). Since then, Peter’s adventures have repeatedly been adapted for various media other than those employed by Barrie. \nIntroductory parts of this analysis outline the role of the fantastic, discuss the often-cited biographical approach to interpretation and illustrate the development of the literary figure Peter Pan. Following a preliminary interpretation of Barrie’s texts, the focus of this analysis is on seven selected adaptations of “Peter Pan” in the visual media comic book and film. By focusing on key elements of the Peter Pan texts, the author not only examines how the narratives of these adaptations correspond to or differ from their source material but also draws attention to media-specific techniques and how they are used to transfer the story from one medium to another.
