Herbert George Baker (1920–2001)—renaissance botanist and incurable holist
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
With the recent deaths of Herbert Baker, Lincoln Constance and Robert Ornduff, a distinguished era in plant systematics and evolution has come to an end at the University of California, Berkeley. Each made important contributions to our knowledge of plant diversity and in their own distinctive ways influenced a generation of graduate students trained at Berkeley. Here I summarise my own reflections on the life of Herbert Baker, his academic background, his numerous accomplishments and the legacy he leaves behind through his diverse research papers and the students he influenced.Baker died on July 2 in Oakland, California (U.S.A.) after a long illness with Parkinson's Disease. He was 81.Herbert Baker along with G. Ledyard Stebbins and Verne Grant were the most influential plant evolutionists of the postwar period, particularly in N. America.Baker made significant contributions to our understanding of the reproductive biology of plants and was one of the foremost authorities on the pollination biology and breeding systems of angiosperms. He also had a life-long interest in plants and human affairs, especially the domestication of crops and the evolution of colonising species. He was the author of Plants and Civilization, a highly successful book first published in 1965 that was translated into at least five languages and is used widely in university courses in economic botany.Baker also played a key role in stimulating early interest in tropical biology, the ecology and genetics of plant invasions, and the chemical constituents of nectar and pollen. These diverse research contributions, taken together with his roles as a teacher, avid supporter of amateur botany, and early advocate for conservation, made Baker one of the most eminent plant biologists of the latter half of the last century.Born in Brighton, England in 1920, Baker received his B.Sc. (1941) and Ph.D.
