Neglected but Not Forgotten: Jews and Nation Building in the Zambian Public Sphere Through the Life Trajectory of Cynthia Sarah Zukas

The article explores the life trajectory of Cynthia Sarah Zukas by reflecting on her contributions as a Jewish woman to nation building in order to mirror the often-neglected roles of the Jews in Zambian scholarship. An interpretive qualitative case study design is employed because the intention is to capture and understand the unique contributions of a Jewish woman in post independence Zambia. Data was collected through document and content analysis in the form of newspaper articles, magazines, and photographs and was thematically analyzed. It was established that after independence, the country’s Jewish community dwindled, thus Zukas’ family was one of the seven Jewish families still living in Zambia. Driven by her experiences of social injustice, Zukas supported the liberation struggle, and contributed towards rebuilding the newly independent Zambia by integrating both black and white Zambians in the Lusaka Art Society. Other than serving on the board of the National Museum and National Arts Council, her contributions were through paintings and prints depicting expressions of urban life such as transport and essential commodity shortages typified by citizens, more often women and children in long queues. Seen through the prism of religion as a resource, the life trajectory of Cynthia Zukas demonstrated that contrary to the portrayal of women in religion as being oppressed, jobless and alienated from the pulpit, religion was resource for nation building and that women were agents of nation building in their own communities and beyond.
