The MoRe Isotopes Project: Production of high specific activity Mo-99 via isotope separation
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
1485 Objectives The MoRe project is developing a high power, off-line isotope separator capable of producing large quantities of Mo-99 at high specific activity from feedstock produced via 98Mo(n,γ) and/or 100Mo(γ,n) routes. Methods A high power ion source coupled to a high resolution dipole magnet will be used to generate beams of molybdenum ions and separate the respective isotopes with the aim of producing Mo-99 with specific activity greater than 1,000 Ci/g. The feedstock for the separator system will be low specific activity Mo-99 generated from thermal neutron capture on Mo-98 or photon induced neutron emission on Mo-100. This approach may allow the use of existing reactors to produce commercial quantities of Mo-99 while eliminating the need to use highly enriched uranium-235 (HEU) targets or incurring expense of converting facilities to use LEU targets. Results Preliminary proof of principle experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of generating intense Mo ion beams. Construction of an ion source test facility incorporating all of the elements of the separator system is underway with the expectation that sufficient beam current and ionization efficiency can be achieved in order to demonstrate the feasibility of using this device for producing commercial quality and quantities of Mo-99. Conclusions The proposed system will have several advantages compared to other proposed solutions: (1) the Mo-99 produced will fit directly into the existing commercial Tc-99m generator supply chain, (2) the elimination of HEU and LEU targets, (3) the system can be used to generate the required target material (Mo-98/Mo-100) during the separation process, (4) simplify production chemistry and (5) can be used in conjunction with a neutron or photon source to create a more robust distributed supply system, all at lower estimated cost than most of the proposed solutions to the medical isotope shortage crisis.
