Background/Purpose:The following presentation has the purpose of taking into consideration the important role mental health providers play within the interdisciplinary team to promote culturally competent psychoeducation in Latinx women with vulvar cancer.The prevalence of gynecological cancers in the Latinx community is increasing.The importance of psychoeducation to understand and apply new skills on how to request a second medical opinion serves as a tool to inform and empower in their decision-making process.Plus, promoting the reduction of stigma for this type of cancer in underserved populations within interprofessional teams.Methods: The presentation will describe the clinical case of a 57 years/o Latinx/Puerto Rican woman diagnosed with stage 2 vulvar cancer who was referred for services to assist with the distress of receiving the diagnosis, making decisions regarding her treatment options and adjustment to the diagnosis.The conceptual framework of Rogler, Malgady, & Rodríguez (1989), will help us organize clinical services according to a hypothetical temporal sequence composed of five phases.The theoretical framework emphasizes the relevance of integrating evidence-based practices such as psychoeducation in the provision of health services to the Latinx populations.Results: Recognizing the growth of gynecological cancers in the Latinx/ Puerto Rican population (Reyes et al., 2015; & PR Cancer Registry, 2017) it is important to integrate cultural factors when working with minority women with vulvar cancer (Davila-Rivera, 2019).Identifying the integration of a culturally sensitive framework, interventions can be developed and implemented.The use of psychoeducation to promote empowerment during the treatment decision making process and during treatment can be beneficial (Chow et al. 2020). Conclusions and Implications:Acknowledging the positive impact of psychoeducation (Chow et al., 2020), in combination with cultural competency as important elements when providing services to Latinx cancer patients with vulvar cancer.This intervention promotes an improvement in the patient's health seeking behaviors, decision making process, and quality of life for minority patients.Plus, expanding the repertoire of tools for mental health providers working with this population. Conclusions and Implications:Recognizing the relevance of presenting and exploring the clinical experiences of Latinxs with vulvar cancer promotes the importance of psychoeducation as an intervention that will promote empowerment to effectively communicate with their medical providers.In combination with a conceptual framework of Rogler, Malgady, & Rodríguez (1989), will help us to organize culturally competent clinical services and mental health/ medical research according to the needs of the patients when deciding their treatment options.
