Because of the large area affected - more than 400 km2 and 790 residents, Shell needed a tool to disseminate the cause, the actions taken, and the barriers / recoveries in place. Communicating these issues in an easy to understand manner was key to regaining trust with the public and regulatory bodies.The Multimedia presentation was selected, and initially presented at a workshop attended by residents, other companies, and local regulators. The video was also formatted and distributed to all interested stakeholders, including other Shell operations.This paper deals with the creation of, and response to, the multimedia presentation. As a pilot project for Shell Caroline, the presentation has been very successful, and the technology will be used in future to disseminate incidents internally and externally, as well as for public consultation of new projects.The Caroline Complex and SPOGShell Canada's Caroline Complex is situated some 150 km. north of the City of Calgary, Alberta. The Complex consists of the Caroline Gas Plant, the Caroline Field including 15 producing wells, 3 compressor stations and associated pipelines, and the Shantz sulfur forming and storage facility. The Caroline Complex began operations in 1993 with estimated raw natural gas and gas liquids reserves of 56 billion cubic meters. Also operating in the area are 31 Oil and Gas Industry companies. The Caroline Complex is one of the founding members of SPOG, the Sundre Petroleum Operators Group.SPOG was formed in February 1992 with members from petroleum companies and the community. The communities in the Sundre and Caroline areas had requested that a one call system be established by which all companies would be notified so that any resident who felt there was an emergency situation could initiate action. A toll free number was set up at the SPOG Mutual Aid Co-ordination Centre (MACC) in the Shell Caroline Gas Plant Control Room. SPOG Mutual Aid is the emergency response network of the Sundre Petroleum Operators Group who monitor the "call down" system and work to improve Emergency Response in the area. Two additional work groups exist within SPOG - Community Affairs, whose vision is to develop 'A long-term relationship based on mutual trust, honesty and respect, by way of sharing pertinent information and resolving issues to benefit all stakeholders', and Environment, which was created to increase awareness of the environmental Best Practices for the Oil and Gas Industry. Currently, SPOG has 30 members companies, 13 Associate public members from area communities, and representatives from towns, Municipal Districts, and the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (AEUB). Figure 1 shows SPOG's geographical extent - an area of approximately 1,500 square km.
