Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension was launched in 1992. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of nephrology and hypertension is divided into 12 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. Section Editors Robert D Toto, MDFigure 1Dr. Toto is a Professor of Medicine and Director of Clinical Nephrology and Patient-Oriented Research at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. He is nationally and internationally known for his clinical research, teaching, and organizational skills. He is deeply involved in training programs in patient oriented research in general and in chronic kidney disease (CKD) in particular. Dr. Toto's research interests include detection, prevention and treatment of common progressive kidney diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. He has extensive experience in the care and management of patients with these diseases as well as conducting research in this area. In addition he is interested in mechanisms of dyslipidemia and hypertension in patients with CKD. He has been a principal investigator in major clinical trials of CKD prevention including the African-American Study of Kidney Disease (AASK trial), the HEMO study and the RENAAL trial. Rhian M TouyzFigure 2Dr Touyz, BSc(Hons), MBBCh, MSc(Med), PhD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Montreal, Staff Scientist in the Laboratory of Experimental Hypertension at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal (IRCM) and Physician in the Hypertension Clinic at the IRCM. Dr Touyz received her medical training and subsequent degrees from the University of the Wiwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Her post-doctoral fellowship was completed at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal. She has received numerous academic and research awards, including the Young Investigator Awards from the American Society of Hypertension, Canadian Society of Hypertension and the Quebec Society of Hypertension as well as being a finalist for the Irving H Page Award, Atherosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology from the American Heart Association. She is a Fellow of the American Heart Association (Council for High Blood Pressure). Dr Touyz was recently awarded the Lewis K Dahl Memorial Lecture Award by the Council for High Blood Pressure, American Heart Association, in recognition of her contributions to hypertension research. Dr Touyz chairs the Subcommittee on “Lifestyle Modifications” is co-chair of the Evidence-Based Recommendations Task Force and is on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Hypertension Education Program (CHEP). She is also the Scientific Chair of the Canadian Hypertension Society. She is funded by grants from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Fonds de la recherche en sante du quebec and has recently been awarded the Canada Research Chair in Hypertension at the University of Ottawa/Ottawa Health Research Institute. In addition she is on the editorial board of Hypertension, Magnesium, Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, American Journal of Physiology and Clinical Science. Dr Touyz is author of more than 150 publications in the field. Her areas of research include clinical and experimental hypertension, signal transduction, oxidative stress, ion transport, vascular remodeling, insulin resistance and diabetes. She is particularly interested in translational research in hypertension, bridging the chasm between bench and bedside.
