Résumé
The aim of this symposium was to consider the present-day knowledge of the cellular and humoral mediators of anaphylaxis and allergy, including the chemical mediators of acute inflammation.Antibodies were first discussed mainly from the point of view of human rcaginic components, and important papers were presented by K .J. Bloch (Boston), B. M. O oilvie and V. E. J ones (London), K. Ishizaka (Denver), and I. Broder (To ronto).Then there were four half-day sessions devoted to the chemical mediators, those released from cells and those derived from PMN-leucocytes, lymphocytes and platelets.In these sessions, the most significant (to the reviewer, at least) were contributions by A. G. Osler (New York), H. Z. Movat (Toronto), W. Vogt (Gottingen), M. E. Webster (Bethesda), and K. F. Austin (Boston) and their colleagues.The final part of the pro ceedings was concerned with humoral mediators generated in plasma and particularly with anaphy la toxin.An interesting account of the release of histamine from rat mast cells (by A. R. J ohnson and N. C. Moran, Atlanta) by antibody shows it to be selective as it is not generally accompanied by release of substances ranging in size from potassium ions to a protein such as lactic dehydrogenase or ATP, intracellular substances presumably located in cellular compartments other than the histamine-containing granules.The book is well produced and easy to read.It should be on the book shelves of all who work in the field of immunology.Naturally, in a subject which continues to advance rapidly now that newer techniques (such as radioimmune assay, gel filtration, and immunoelectrophoretic conversions) are freely available, some of the results of a meeting held in October 1968 are fast being modified by recent findings.It is apparent that even more rapid advances should come through comparable studies in animals.Furthermore unique pharmacological inhibitors of one stage of the anaphylactic reaction may provide new approaches to studying the tissue injury associated with immediate-type hypersensitivity.The success of the Canadian Symposium (like those now being organized in other parts of the world) was probably attributable to the multidisciplinary nature of the subject that was chosen, and for this reason the book is valuable as it records the ideas of both experi mentalists and clinicians.G.
