International society for laboratory hematology: Focus on education

The International Society for Laboratory Hematology (ISLH), formed in 1992 to support laboratory hematology, is dedicated to the advancement of education in laboratory hematology. The executive ISLH committee position of vice president (VP) of Education was created in 2015. With the leadership of Joyce Rogers, the inaugural VP of Education, and a generous grant from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation (WHCF), there grew an educational project to include webinar series, interactive e-cases, e-learning courses, guideline inventory, and networking collaboration. The live webinar series provides a unique opportunity for pathologists, trainees, scientists, and hematology laboratory technologists from around the globe to participate real time in a moderator-facilitated discussion with the webinar presenter. The recorded webinars and other educational opportunities can be viewed on the ISLH education page https://www.islh.org/ISLH-Education/index.php Activities to promote education also include the annual educational workshop, occurring one day in advance of the start of the annual ISLH meeting. The educational workshop typically includes six to eight invited speakers who are international experts in various aspects of laboratory hematology including but not limited to, morphology, technical updates in hematologic tests, standardization and guidelines, coagulation, flow cytometry, and molecular genetic diagnostics. For further dissemination of these educational presentations, the speakers at the educational workshop are invited to participate in the live webinar series. The annual meeting of ISLH, "International Symposium on Technical Innovations in Laboratory Hematology" provides many Continuing Medical Education (CME) accredited learning opportunities, with a focus on technical advances; the current meeting program may be viewed at https://www.islh.org/2022/ Concurrent with the annual meeting, an educational issue of the International Journal of Laboratory Hematology (IJLH) is published, with review articles contributed by many of the speakers at the annual ISLH meeting. The educational issue of IJLH is free to access; the 2021 volume may be viewed on the IJLH website https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/1751553x/2021/43/S1 Members of ISLH who champion educational activities include the current and past VP of Education, ably supported by the members of the ISLH education committee; the current committee membership is posted on the ISLH website https://www.islh.org/web/committee.php Opportunities to contribute to education with ISLH include joining ISLH, submitting an interactive e-case or e-learning course, contributing to the guideline inventory, and participating in the international networking and collaboration program.
