Ruiz, Carrie L., and Elena Rodríguez-Guridi, eds. Shipwreck in the Early Modern Hispanic World. Foreword by Josiah Blackmore
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Many ships crossed the ocean highways of the early modern Hispanic world without ever arriving at their final destinations.Shipwrecks occurred with such frequency that Carrie L. Ruiz and Elena Rodríguez-Guridi argue they were central to the "epistemology of the era" (1) and thus a way to reflect on the global expansion of the Spanish Empire.Shipwreck in the Early Modern Hispanic World-an edited volume comprised of a brief introduction and eight chapters-analyzes how Spanish authors portray shipwrecks in sixteenth-and seventeenth-century plays, poems, narratives, and chronicles.Drawing upon Josiah Blackmore's study of Portuguese shipwreck literature in Manifest Perdition: Shipwreck Narrative and the Disruption of Empire (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2002), the contributing authors demonstrate how narratives of nautical disasters complicate the triumphant vision of Spanish imperialism. The first three chapters consider Golden Age writers in Spain.Ruiz suggests that the shipwreck trope in María de Zayas's "Tarde llega el desengaño" (1647) inverts early modern notions of gender by challenging the patriarchal order.Shipwrecks, then, were not only part of a primarily male "nautical collective imaginary" (22) but they also offered women ways of communicating moral lessons that addressed contemporary social and political issues.Julio Baena and Rodríguez-Guridi unpack the meaning of nautical disasters in the literary masterpieces of Luis de Góngora and Miguel de Cervantes: Soledades (1613) and Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda (1617).Rodríguez-Guridi's reading of Soledades is of particular interest because it moves beyond the thematic importance of shipwrecks to their relationship to syntax. The reader experiences the turmoil and shifting fortunes of castaways in the chaos and complexities of the textual landscape of the silva ("forest of verses") (40).Two chapters focus on Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca's shipwrecks, captivity, and adventures across what today is the American South and Southwest.Natalio Ohanna stresses the limitations of applying contemporary definitions of history, ethnography, and fiction to early modern texts like the Relación
