Résumé
My remarks are limited to personal reminiscences of ProfessorEmilio Goggio and include background information provided by the members of his family. His name was well known to me even before I was admitted into the University of Toronto as a first year student many years ago My father, who in the thirties was parttime correspondent for // Progresso Italo-Americano of New York, often mentioned his name in connection with events taking place in the Italian community. In that capacity he had ample opportunity to get to know Professor Goggio who was often invited to speak to various groups in the community. His tall commanding presence combined with the gift of communicating with great facility won a special place for him within and beyond the university. He was held in the highest regard by the Italian community which he represented on occasions of great importance. His name is mentioned in many articles in // Progresso Italo-Americano.I first became acquainted with Professor Goggio as a student in his Spanish grammar class and discovered how tolerant and understanding with students he could be.I used to sit in the Spanish class next to Johnny Wayne, who later became one of Canada's famous comedians as a partner in the Wayne and Shuster team.We had gone to the same high school together.Being a very busy actor and comedian and always in demand, Johnny would sometimes come to class without having his homework prepared.During the class Professor Goggio would give each student a turn to read his translation of an English sentence into Spanish. When it was Johnny's turn, he would casually look at my notebook and read what I had written.Professor Goggio looked down at us both with a knowing look, and with a twinkle in his eye would call on the next student, without comment.Sometime in the spring of 1937 when I was a second year student at the University of Toronto, my father received a telephone call from Professor Goggio informing him that 1 had won a trip to Italy offered by the Italian Government.A short time later to celebrate the event,
