Résumé
While the writing of a scholarly monograph frequently abstracts the author from the daily round of human relationships because it necessarily involves many solitary hours spent in archives and the quiet of a study, this particular project has been for me a particularly satisfying one, as it has both deepened old friendships and forged new ones.Many individuals and institutions have given generously of their time and expertise to offer me the benefits of their support, insight, and advice.My most profound intellectual and personal debt, as always, is to Nancy Christie, who several years ago urged me to set aside a more amorphous research project on nineteenth-century Protestantism, and explore the twentieth-century relationship between religion and modernity.She also generously provided me with an opportunity to publish my early findings on the new relationship between Quebec Catholicism and ideas of gender and marriage, which form a critical pillar of this study.As the research progressed, I was fortunate to encounter many historians of Quebec who are fascinated with the role of religious identities and institutions.At an early stage of defining the topic more clearly, I benefited from the advice of Pierre Trepanier and Jacques Rouillard.Roberto Perm, from the perspective of his own researches into twentieth-century Catholicism, offered a piece of advice that I have endeavoured to apply -to avoid being caught up in the continued mythmaking surrounding the Quiet Revolution.Audiences at the Canadian Historical Association, the Universite du Quebec a Montreal, the Catholic University of America, McMaster University, and Universite Laval heard various versions of the interpretation, and were open and fulsome with their criticism and advice.More importantly, long conversations over many coffee breaks and evening dinners in Toronto and Montreal with Ollivier Hubert sharpened my thinking about the nature of cultural history and the place of Catholicism in Quebec historiography.
