Robert Kenny returnsto the days before the British Conquest, in 'The Edifying Spectacle', a carefully documented account of the impact of Baron de Lahontan's Suitesdu Voyage de l'Amerique, ouDialogues deMonsieur deLahontan etd'unSauvage (I 703) on the imagination of French eighteenth-century dramatists.This work was a vital source for LouisFrancoisDelisle de la Drevetiere's immensely popularArlequin Sauvage, which in its turn inspired numerous pieces by Lesage amongst others and, so Kenny believes, the music Les Sauvages of the composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. Celine Gagnon's paper on Yves Theriault (I915-83) turns to the link between writing and the modern media, stressingthe close relationship between radio and the strong oral tradition of Quebec and showing how Theriault's gifts as a storyteller found a particularly fruitful outlet in his numerous radio plays of the 4os and 5os, in particularLeSamaritain (I952). The writing, performance, and reception historyof Michele Lalonde's celebrated poem/manifesto SpeakWhiteis the subject of an excellent piece by Kathy Mezei that highlights the subtleties and slippageswithin thevoice of the text and the changinghues of itscolorationin line with the evolution of the culturaland political landscape of Quebec. Dispassionatelyapproachingthe separatistagenda from a legal standpoint,Gibrartvan Ertconcisely rehearseslegal definitionsof nationalityas they might apply to Anglo-Quebeckersin the event of a secessionof Quebec, pointing to theunsatisfactorinessof definitionsbasedessentially on territorialitywith little space for the free choice of the individual. Christian Poirierrounds off an interestingcollection with a series of reflectionson Quebec's ambiguous stance to the monuments and events of its past and on the role of memory in the constructionof a collectivepolitical and culturalidentity. Exploration and development of some of the topics treated is inevitably limited by the conference format.
